Firefly Lane Review

I just finished this amazingly heartwarming and heartbreaking novel by Kristin Hannah. The book came highly recommended, and I was hesitant at first because it began very much like Summer Sisters by Judy Blume. I admit that Summer Sisters is one of my favorite books about friendship, and I pretty much compare almost every book to that one.
Without giving the ending away, I will say that it was a beautifully woven tale about the complexities of a forever friendship. As with all women, love and envy are intrinsically linked, and this book really played that out. With Tully as a larger than life TV star and Kate as a stay at home mom, it would seem that they have little in common. What they do have in common, and what means everything, is Firefly Lane and the life that began there. They met in middle school, and they were best friends as well as exact opposites. Coming from very different backgrounds and heading for equally different futures, it was nearly impossible to NOT fall in love with both of them. The story spans 40 years and ends in such a perfect way. For once, the ending was not predicatble. This quality alone puts this book on top of the Great Book Pile! At the risk of souning cliche, it made me laugh, think, and cry. What more can one ask from a book?

Happy Blog Birthday

Yay! My blog is ONE year old! Wahoo! I am thrilled that I managed to maintain this for one year. There is hope!

Here is my maiden post: http://honeydew1894.blogspot.com/2009/06/welcome-to-my-blog.html

Summer vacation is so close I can taste it! It is funny how most teachers look forward to summer vacation just as much (if not more!) than the kids do! I have been working a TON at Airway so I am ready to be finished with school.

My last day of school plan, as of now, is:
1. Go to school until 10 am
2. Get my huge paycheck
3. Go to Moreau Lake and hang out at the beach
4. Go to work

I know it is not super-exciting, but I just want to relax and read my book!

The great news is that we leave for Maine on Friday. I am pretty excited to get away with D.

Travel System

We made another important baby purchase last night! While there is still no baby in sight, I have been worried that we didn't have a car seat. D found this travel system on one of his daily deals web sites, and I love it! It should be here some time this week! Now if only a baby would follow...

Another new item that I purchased this week was an iPod Touch. I am just starting to play around with it, but WOW it is amazing! I love how intuitive it is. D is putting my music on it today, and I really hope to use the Nike app to help motivate me to exercise! If not, I just purchased a really expensive planner!

Memorial Day Weekend

I had a 5-day weekend this year, and WOW was it busy! This weekend was a fair mix of work and play, and I am returning to work a bit less tired than before. I only have 8 more days with the kids, which is unbelievable to me. The first day of school just does not seem like it was that long ago, and yet, in 8 short days, they will move on. The end of the year is always bittersweet. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE summer vacation, but I do find myself missing school and the kids after a while. While I have had some tough kids this year, I have really enjoyed my classes for the most part.

So here is a rundown of our weekend...
Friday, Day 1 of Memorial Day weekend for me! J and A came up for lunch and outlet shopping! It was a fab girl's day ending with wine and birthday cake on the deck. A's birthday is May 30th so we celebrated a bit early!

Saturday, Day 2: We headed to NH to visit with D's family. Our BIL's father passed away so D's sister and family were in from CA! While I wish the circumstances had been better, it was great to see them! We came home to drop off the dogs, and then we were off to another party. Our friends A and T (who are getting married in the fall!) hosted a BBQ. We enjoyed the great food, nice weather, margaritas, and fab friends. I love how most of our friends have been our friends for what seems like umpteen years. There is such a comfort level, and I really love it!

Sunday, Day 3: After a late night, we slept in...a bit! Our friends B and M came by with Baby C! She turned 6 months old today! It is hard to believe how fast she is growing. After our baby fix, J and J came up for lunch. It was so nice out so we ate on the deck again. Lastly, it was off to work!

Monday, Day 4: Today we met P and J, D's HS buddies for breakfast. We went to a diner, and the food was so so. After that, we lounged around until I had to go into work. :-(

Tuesday, Day 5: Day 5 was the worst...mostly because this weekend had given me a taste of summer vacation. I would catch myself thinking (as I was bartending) how nice it will be once I don't have to worry about what time I will get out of work since I won't have school in the morning. I spent a fair amount of time today doing un-fun stuff...like groceries and getting an oil change. Overall, the weekend was FAB! Can't wait until summer vacation!
